Shrimp farmers will remove or crush the eyes of females to make them breed faster—this is called eyestalk ablation.

Shrimp eyestalks also control hormones. So when one is removed, the shrimp’s reproductive system goes into overdrive allowing them to reproduce more.

This is done to captive shrimp because they otherwise wouldn’t reproduce in such terrible living conditions.
