The fleshy, elongated growth that hangs over a turkey’s beak is called a snood. The snood grows and changes color based on the turkey’s mood.
When a turkey is excited or trying to impress, the snood becomes engorged with blood, elongating and changing color to bright red.
A longer and more brightly colored snood is often seen as more attractive to female turkeys. When a turkey is calm, the snood may be shorter and paler.
