Ponies and horses are two distinct equine classifications, with ponies usually measuring 14.2 hands or less in height while horses measure 14.3 hands or taller.

Ponies tend to have thicker manes, tails and coats than horses, as well as shorter legs and wider barrels. They also have proportionally larger heads and eyes compared to their body size.

Ponies also tend to be more sure-footed than horses due to their smaller size which allows them to navigate difficult terrain more easily.
