Grizzlies will fight for mating rights or to establish their dominance

To see bears in the wild, look for signs of them like overturned rocks and stumps, torn-up rotten logs, scratch marks and bits of fur on tree bark, scat, and tracks in snow or mud.

Keep your distance during bear encounters and stay calm. Keep noise minimal but talk calmly as a way to alert the bear to your presence as a human and not prey.

Bear attacks on humans are rare but they do attack to protect cubs, food, and territory.
