Flamingos are born gray with fluffy down feathers

It takes several years for flamingos to develop pinkish feathers.

The pink color of flamingo feathers actually comes from beta-carotene—a red-orange pigment that’s found in algae, brine fly larvae, and brine shrimp that flamingos eat.
