These are actually meteoroids – small pieces of rock and dust – entering Earth’s atmosphere at very high speeds.
The friction caused by their acceleration through the atmosphere causes them to heat up and glow brightly, creating a streak in the night sky. As they burn up, they disintegrate and eventually dissipate completely.
