In ancient Greece, emeralds were seen as a lucky stone that could bring the wearer good fortune, love and health. It was believed that Aphrodite herself used to adorn her hair with emeralds when she visited Mount Olympus. 

In Roman mythology, Venus is the goddess of love and beauty and was believed to be responsible for creating the first emerald. It is said that Venus wore a necklace of emeralds and surrounding her were cupid statues wearing necklaces of the same gemstone.
