Pileated Woodpeckers drill rectangular holes into trees that can sometimes be large enough to cause small trees to break in half.

Pileated Woodpeckers can be spotted at all heights in the forest and are often seen foraging on logs and near the bases of trees.

Pileated woodpeckers are one of the largest forest birds and have black and white plumage, with a red crest on its head.

You can often find this huge pecker drilling into tree trunks in search of its insect prey.

It is found throughout North America, from Canada to Mexico.

Tip: Leave dead or dying trees on your property alone if you want to attract Pileated Woodpeckers (as well as other woodpeckers, nuthatches, etc.) to forage, roost or even nest in them.
