The February full Moon is called the Snow Moon because this name is attributed to the typically heavy snowfall that occurs in February in many northern regions.
The February 24, 2024 full moon will be a minimoon. Unofficially called a ‘minimoon’, the moon will look slightly smaller than usual. This is because of the moon’s elliptical orbit, with the moon looking smaller about a day before the moon hits its most distant point from Earth known as apogee. Apogee is 253,000 miles (405,500 kilometers) from Earth on average.
How to see the February Minimoon
Stargazers in the eastern U.S. have a chance to see the minimoon during the morning hours of February 24.
