Giant tube worms stay erect at 8 feet long with pulsing red tips filled with blood and thrive in toxic environments

Giant tube worms were discovered in 1977 and until then it was believed that all living things required energy from the sun.  These worms grow in colonies around hydrothermal vents in deep ocean water and thrive on sulfur and bacteria.
