Plankton is a term used for both microscopic plants and animals that drift in the ocean.

An organism qualifies as plankton if it is transported by the movement of tides and currents with the inability to swim against it.

Phytoplankton are plants and zooplankton are animals.

The term “plankton” is derived from the Greek word meaning “drifter” or “wanderer.”
