Carrot hot dogs are a healthy alternative to traditional hot dogs, perfect for vegetarians, vegans, or anyone looking to add more vegetables to their diet. They are made by marinating and grilling whole carrots until they’re tender and flavorful. The carrots do a great job at absorbing flavors and have a similar texture to regular hotdogs.
These are also a much better alternative to pre-packaged vegetarian and vegan hot dogs in stores.
Vegetarian Carrot Hot Dogs
Carrot hot dogs are made by marinating and grilling whole carrots until they're tender and flavorful. The carrots do a great job at absorbing flavors and have a similar texture to regular hotdogs.
Ingredients
- 6 Whole carrots, peeled
- 4 cups Vegetable broth
- 2 tbsp Chicken* Seasonings *McCormick® Grill Mates® Montreal Chicken Seasoning is Vegan
Instructions
- Peel the carrots and trim them to fit your hot dog buns. Add seasonings to a pot of water with carrots. Boil them in water for about 15-20 minutes or until they are fork-tender but not too soft (about the firmness of a typical hotdog). Drain.OPTIONAL: Marinate the carrots overnight in the seasoned broth. Make sure they are submerged. Cover and refrigerate for at least 3 hours, or overnight for best results, turning them occasionally to marinate evenly.
- Preheat your grill or grill pan over medium-high heat. Remove the carrots from the marinade and grill them, turning occasionally, until they are heated through and have grill marks, about 5-10 minutes. OPTIONAL: Coat carrots in BBQ sauce before grilling.
- Prepare the buns and toppings. If you like your buns toasted, place them on the grill for a minute or two.
Notes
The longer you marinate the carrots, the more flavorful they will be.
Adjust the seasoning of the marinade according to your taste preferences.
For a smokier flavor, you can add a bit of liquid smoke or chilli powder to the marinade.
